Lightweight, easier to read degrees
lightweight, so it's easy to carry to/from site, easy to set up/read degree markings; thin kerf blade resulted in very neat cuts; really liked the dual slide - for smaller width boards you can lock the back slide so that you are pulling/pushing less distance. One issue was adjusting the fence to zero-degree alignment, fence would not stay aligned after tightening screws - i couldn't get that perfect 90° cut.

... going to start out by saying that I really love this saw
I'm going to start out by saying that I really love this saw. I'm a commercial general contractor and have used just about every brand of sliding miter saw out there (Dewalt, Milwaukee, Hitachi, Ryobi, Bosch) and this has been my favorite so far. The soft-start motor is a nice touch and the saw glides effortlessly. Cuts are accurate and repeatable and the tall fence is nice for cutting crown molding. You can't cut everything with a 10" saw but for trim work and a general purpose saw, 10" is my favorite size. A bonus is that this saw comes with a quality blade from the factory.

DO NOT BUY!
FENCE WILL NOT SQUARE TO THE BLADE. I don't get why such a nice piece of equipment can have such a HUGE design flaw. DO NOT BUY THIS SAW!!

Disapointment
After using this saw for over a year now I find it to be a disappointing investment. Perhaps I received a bad copy but this saw lacks the power to cut through hard wood without bogging down and vibrating. That's with a high quality 80 tooth CC blade, forget about throwing a cheaper blade on this saw. On right hand bevel cuts this saw is terribly disappointing, it really has a difficult time even with plywood. One other thing to mention is on any cross cut the transition from bottom slide rail to top slide rail there is a noticeable bump that can be detected in the material, not good.

had to adjust the fence but don't know how to adjust the detents so the accuracy is off

A solid piece of equipment
The Makita Compound Miter Saw is a great pieceof equipment. It's detentes for various anglesare spot on. Something that is lacking in otherbrands:" I know because I've had a bad experiencewith a discount brand saw. The Makita also fit wellon the older Ridgid brand table that I was usingso it was not necessary to spend another $400for a new table.

This is a great precision saw
This is a great precision saw. I did extensive research and couldn't find better build quality for the money. As with any precision tool, you must calibrate (square) the saw before use. This was easy and intuitive. It is a relatively quiet saw and has great dust collection on soft woods.

and they always go bad in the same way
I am a contractor, so this saw, (and all of my previous ones,) sees heavy use. This is probably the 5th Makita LS 1016 10" saw that I've bought over the last 20 years. They seem to be lasting for a shorter and shorter period of time every time that I buy a new one, and they always go bad in the same way, the miter control handle and mechanism falls apart. It's a shame, because the motor never goes. Despite the miter control handle problem, it's still they best slide miter saw out there.
