Can I sew a raw edge with my machine if I cut to shorter lengths?

I don’t see any ability to sew or hem a raw edge. The material just doesn’t seem to provide enough foundation for the machine to “bite,” and sew a hem correctly. I will say that when I’ve cut it, I’ve often thought about using heat to “seal,” the loose end and prevent fraying. With the apparent plastic content, I believe heat would be the better choice (heat gun, lighter, etc).
