Well, RO water is a bit aggressive to copper however I have used a whole house RO system in all my homes for the past 40 years and never had an issue!

Some of Dwayne's answer is correct and some of it is technically incorrect. The correct part isSome of Dwayne's answer is correct and some of it is technically incorrect. A water softener actually increases TDS slightly but is almost always necessary because the calcium, magnesium and iron it removes (hard water) WILL prematurely plug up a membrane while the sodium it puts back in the water to replace what it removed will not. The reverse osmosis membrane does the actual TDS reduction (not the water softener). As for the 4000 TDS, that is at or above the reach of many RO systems. If I were in your situation I would get a reliable method of testing the TDS as Dwayne was eluding to unless you are positive the 4000 number is correct and call the manufacturer with your results. Explain what you're trying to accomplish and the equipment you're planning to use including the size and type of water softener and pre filter you plan to use and see if they will agree that you are on the right path. If they say the water is too high in TDS for the equipment then Dwayne is right and you will be making a costly mistake. Also, based on the water I work with, TDS in that range goes hand in hand with water containing high sodium and chloride (salt). When this happens, the salt setting on the water softener needs to be set at the maximum level or it won't work properly. Another thing that often happens is that water with high salt generally has low hardness. If you have it tested and the hardness is low, say under 3 grains per gallon (51 ppm) you may be fine without a water softener, or a smaller system may be adequate. However, if there is any iron at all, it MUST be removed with a pre filter for ferric (oxidized) iron and a water softener or automatic backwashing iron filter for ferric and/or ferrous (dissolved iron). If either type of filter is used, install it before the water softener but if the automatic filter is used there is no need for the pre filter except there should be at least one 5 micron filter placed in front of the RO membrane if the system is not already equipped with one.

How hard is it to winterize, ie, drain the water so it doesn’t freeze?

Will this system hand 3 faucets and a dishwasher?

providing you have adequate storage and do not exceed 300 G per day total usage for these, it will. I have 90 gal storage and it handles my entire house hot water usage including washing machine and dishwasher. I have, however, only one could water facet connected to it for drinking and cooking water. In other facets, it mixes with "untreated" cold water still lowering its TDS etc. by default. Do not see much reason to wash my hands or flush toiltes with RO treated water.
