Can the stain stick be removed from the pad applicator for hand use ?

It can. However, the pad does not have a handle to hold on to if you are planning on using with out a stick. To be honest with you, and am sorry to say, i was not very pleased with this product. It created more of a mess than anything else. A lot of energy was waisted because the paint did not flow out as easily as the manufacturer makes it seem to be. I eventually used a roller to apply the paint/varnish/stain. Hope my response helped either way.

can this be used at any angle (upside, vertical etc..) We have a pergola that we need to stain the top - seems like this would work, not sure...

Might work, but we used a spray gun to stain the top of our pergola and used this on our deck boards under the pergola. Worked well, but buy extra pads.

Can you take the wheel off and use it without?

I am not sure. I got frustrated with it so I ended up throwing it in the trash. I was hoping it was going to work great but it did not.
