Good upgrade for Sterling Ray4 bass
Got this 38x3.5mm flat bottom nut to replace the plastic nut on my Sterling SUB Ray4 bass and the difference is seriously night and day. Definitely recommend the upgrade, especially at this price ($8). This was not a perfect direct replacement for the nut on my Ray4, but it only took a little filing to get this new nut to fit snugly. NOTE: the string slots on this nut are not on the same radius as the Ray4 original nut, so the A and D strings are a little lower. Wasn't a deal breaker for me but good to know.

Huge time saver if in a pinch
I’ve only ever made my own nuts from a bone blank. But I tried one of these out to save time and finish up my last acoustic guitar build and it worked out great. It took way less time than making one from scratch, which for the guitar I’m making has became a necessity to finish immediately or I will burn it in a fire. This guitar build has caused me the most grief out of any that I’ve made so far. I’m not selling it, so it just needs to get done. I’m at that point with it.Anyway…The nut is about 6mm thick and my nut slot was 5mm so I only had to thin this one down a bit to fit in. The string spacing is fine. It was barely wider than my slot so I just had to remove a tiny bit of length which I did on the high E side so as to keep the distance from the edge of the nut to the low E string where it was, which is about 4mm.I’m not sure how often I’ll use one of these, but it worked great. It is actually bone and it appears to be bleached. Matched the bleached bone saddle that I had already made perfectly in color. The height of the nut was perfect in my case. My fretboard is about 1/4” thick in the middle and the radius of the top of the nut seems to match my 14” fretboard radius almost perfectly. The slots for the strings are there, but just enough to hold the strings, so naturally, they will need to be filed some in order to get the action at the nut right.

You will need a lot of patience when sizing this part
Most of the reviews say it required about 10 minutes of sanding to have this piece up and running, however when it comes to filing the depth of the grooves that that line up your strings, making sure the string buzz is to a minimum on your neck, and making sure your bridge height is set properly, this nut may possibly take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on what filing tools you have at your disposal. I did mine with some 80 grit sand paper and an old set of bass strings to make sure my new set of strings will easily go through different tunings with the least amount of resistance. Overall, amazing product. Worth the money just make sure you are getting your proper measurements before ordering this part.

Excellent quality, great upgrade for my guitar!
I purchased this as an upgrade to a plastic nut I bought for an Indio Telecaster. It was a bit think for the nut slot so I slowly sanded it down to the correct width and it slotted in perfectly. It took no more than 5 minutes using a flat sheet of sandpaper. Once installed I immediately had better tuning stability on the guitar and have been very impressed with the playability of the guitar. I liked it so much that I have bought a coupleMore as upgrades for other guitars in my collection. If you are looking for a high quality bone nut, you cannot go wrong with these.
