Worked well for me.
I bought this item to keep my dog from trotting down to the basement to eat cat food. Although I haven't ever heard the alarm sound, I haven't found any evidence of my dog going downstairs, so I'm happy. My dog is an indoor dog, 20 lbs. The collar unit is small, lightweight and is attached to a fairly thin but sturdy black collar. It would be nice if I could attach it to her existing collar (reflective with name tags), but I don't see an easy way to do that. The alarm is on the large unit that is placed in the area you want to keep them away from, not on the collar itself, which I was confused about. So when it goes off, it will not be deafening your pet, which is good since it is pretty loud. I foster pets and I think this is a good concept for keeping pets away from areas where you don't want them (bedrooms, garden, etc.) without causing them any physical pain.

Way Too Fragile!
This device works great! My Lab had no trouble learning to stay away from the area protected by the Sound Barrier or get an annoying beep blasted in his ears. However the downsides are: the alarm sounds when you use a blower nearby or even kids yelling or loud laughing, more annoying is the batteries as mentioned by others being made specifically so that they are not commonly available, but my biggest complaint is that the dog just has to scratch his neck, as dogs do, and the cover is knocked off and the battery and cover lost. I have now bought 3 of these devices in the last year. I would try some other option if I could find it.

Totally useless.
Don't buy this. It doesn't work. Save your money. The story:I am the loving owner of an 8 year old black labrador who has been with me since he was 8 weeks old.The house we have lived in for the last 7 years has a basement with a door that leads to the back yard. Conveniently, the previous tenants were dog owners (as is the landlord, who lived here before that) so there was already a dog door installed in the basement door to the yard and consequently my dog has been free to come and go as he pleases.Cut to last week when my girlfriend moved in along with her 3 year old cat who has been an indoor cat all her life, having lived in a fifth story apartment up until this point. We looked at various options as to how to stop the cat going through the dog door. Our efforts were brought into sharp focus after a frantic search when she got out (to then be found three hours later back in the house, hanging out under the bed).We decided to try this product to stop her from going into the basement.I read the instructions and set the receiver up so that it went off when the transmitter on the collar got about a foot from the door leading to the basement. I simulated "cat height" and even covered it with my hand to see if the cat's fur or head would somehow mask the signal. It didn't - It went off every time I got close. The cat seemed not at all phased by wearing the transmitter collar. So far so good!In putting the unit to the test in the real world, the mechanics and electronics all functioned fine. The problem lay in the fact that, even though she's very skittish and shy, the alarm did absolutely nothing to deter her from walking straight past the device and getting lost again. We got her back and I have now finagled another way of stopping the cat getting into the basement.Basically, the one thing this product is meant to do, it clearly does not!Utter garbage!

Cat keep away
I purchased this sonic collar to shoo my kitty away from the doggie door. She is an indoor cat, but i found her shivering on the outside of the doggie door once. She had pushed out, but wasn't sure how to get back inside. I put the sonic colar on her own collar, then placed the alarm at the doggie door and set alarm at 2ft range. I watched as she walked toward the door, the alarm screamed and she took off. With her it only took one time, she avoids that area for now.I gave the product 4 stars instead of 5 because, I noticed when I took the collar off and laid it on a table she would walk by and instantly find the collar. I tried hiding collar but she immediatley found it. I held collar to my ear and discovered it has an audible constant buzz. With a cat's sensitive hearing I personally feel it would be cruel to leave te collar around their neck all the time. So, my plan is to let her wear it ocassionally when i see she needs a little reinfrcement training.

Garbage
This product doesn't work period. The receiver has no way of actually judging your cat's distance from it, except VOLUME. That's right, a microphone checks the intensity of the ultrasonic pulses emitted from the collar. Why is this poor design? Simple. PLENTY of things emit ultrasonic sound. Microwave? Check. Stirfry? Check. Brushing a carpet? Check. I've been startled by the alarm doing basic household chores more times than I can count. If you're going to put this in the laundry area, or kitchen, be prepared to get frustrated.Secondly, the product is VERY erratic. At the same "range" setting, I've had the alarm go off when my cats were anywhere from 1m to 3m away. I've also had it not go off at all. All kinds of things affect this, from the type of floor in the room (carpet vs tile), to the angle you place device at. If your cat isn't directly in front of the product, it doesn't fire.To add to that, the collar batteries are standard button cell batteries, the type you can find at any hardware store, even supermarket. They have been modified with a few sheets of aluminum and marked up to, what was it? $30? I forget. Despicable. When it comes down to it, this product is extremely primitive tech, and does not work as intended. Save your money.

50 dollars well spent
Easy and inexpensive. Works great to keep kitten away from doggy door. Collar device is lightweight and kitten doesn't mind wearing it at all. Dogs can go in and out and kitty stays away. I don't have to watch to see if he is messing with doggy door. The alarm will alert me but also freaks him out and he knows where it occurs. Smart, smart , smart
