what does it smell like

It has a nice, fresh smell. Not overpowering at all. I've had two dogs at the same time for 40 years (not the same ones, of course), and this product is the best that I have ever used to get rid of stains from animal vomit, urine, feces....you name it, this product made it disappear. And that includes non-animal stains!

Can I spray on a whole rug then vacuum?

This is a “wet” spray. You still would have to blot and wait til it was dry before you vacuum. It does work well when used as directed.

What is the difference between this and the bissell oxy pet powershot product?

This works on every stain, not just pet stain.

Will old saliva stains be removable reliably?

Yes It would be good for that :)
