How long do the knives / blades generally last?

Knives aren't the problem, the plastic gears on the bottom go out quickly. I threw it away and got a porter cable. The gears are metal. Trust me, get metal gears.

Where can I buy replacement blades for wen 6552 planer

You can buy them from the wen website. Just search for 6552-043. That is the part number. For some reason if you just type in blades for 13 inch planer they don't show up, but if you look up the 13-inch planer and look under the tab for parts it is listed under there

How often do the blades need replacing? i have seen complaints with dewalt planers dulling out after 50 bf. how does wen compare?

I have had this for about a year, and have planed cedar, cypress, oak (the hardest), pine, even a few pressure treated , estimated total linear board feet to be in the neighborhood of about 1000' thus far, and i have only pulled them to inspect, clean and reinstall, and they keep going, but, i know, the next maintenance interval, i will need to sharpen them or replace them.

Will this plane a 3/16 board down to 1/8?

You would probably have to make two passes to do a good job.
