5Bs are wider and a little heavier than 5As. Oak is heavier and harder than maple.

The answer is Yes, And you get 2, And very good one I may add. I like Vic Firth sticks And the 5B are a lot sturdier than the As and a bit heavier. They will be great for a kid just starting out. Good luck to him and happy drumming!
