how does this pick up balls? Or is it me picking up the balls and dropping them in?

You should pick up the ball carrier, carry it over to the tennis ball and kinda drop it (while still holding on to the carrier) onto the ball. The tennis ball should slide between the bars on the bottom of the carrier.

I was hoping that this might work for baseballs as well. Is it strong enough for baseballs?

Should be fine for holding some baseballs (but probably not filled up). However, picking up baseballs with this is a no-go. It works with Tennis balls because they are a little smaller and a bit squishy. Baseballs are hard and a little larger. The openings on the bottom for picking up tennis balls are not going to work for a baseball. If you try it, you'll probably just damage the hopper.
