Her first novel published after her death
I enjoyed this novel more than Villette. I would say it is her second greatest novel after Jane Eyre. A wonderful discovery for me.

Satisfaction with Book Purchase
I was most pleased with the prompt delivery of this wonderful novel by Charlotte Bronte. The condition of the book was perfectly described by the seller as "new." I would recommend "The Professor" to anyone who is a follower of Charlotte Bronte's wonderful books. Have both an English and French dictionary at your side when reading it, but this does not distract from the great story.

not nearly as good as Wuthering Heights and Jane
The Bronte Sisters' book that I bought were ones that I had not taught; they were difficult, buried in historical references; not nearly as good as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre

Great Book
I recently read The Professor by Charlotte Bronte. This work of Bronte is often overlooked due to the fame of her other works such as Jane Eyre. The Professor was published in 1857 despite being written in the 1840s. “The Professor” gives a glimpse into Bronte’s views on social class, education, and gender roles. The main character and protagonist of the story is William Crimsworth. Crimsworth is a man who comes from a more humble background before seeking a position teaching abroad. An Englishman, Crimsworth leaves his home country of England for continental Europe. Crimsworth takes a job as a teacher at a school in Belgium where he teaches English. The school he is employed at is a girl’s school in Brussels. While the Professor does include an interesting plot, it is not as plot driven as many of Bronte’s other books. In fact, this story especially focuses on character development and deep dives into themes such as social class and gender roles. This makes Bronte’s book an intriguing read that will really leave you hooked.A major theme that the book hits on is gender roles. At the time of the story, 19th century Europe, the expectations and limitations of men and women were very different. Bronte takes Crimsworth’s perspective of his role and his students to shed light on the ways in which his female students were struggling. He also notices how his female coworkers struggle throughout the story. Let me be clear, this is not a “feminist” novel per say. Yet, it offers some interesting thoughts on gender roles and the role society plays in them.Another major theme that the story touches on is that of social mobility and class. Crimsworth comes from a very modest background yet longs for a better life. However, the social structure of the time does not allow for him to easily do that. The way that Charlotte Bronte describes the Belgian hierarchy and aristocrats offers an interesting view on the social structure. It also displays her understanding of their social class. The way in which the characters develop throughout the story if a testament to Bronte’s writing. She gives a depth to many of the characters that seemingly gets deeper and deeper as the story continues. For example, William Crimsworth, develops significantly throughout the novel. In fact, this is key to the entirety of the writing. He learns how to persevere as well as the importance of friendship and community. As stated earlier, “The Professor” is not one of Bronte’s more well-known pieces of work. However, it is still valuable for a plethora of reasons. It gives us an insight into Charlotte Bronte’s growth as a writer while also giving us a peek into 19th century society and life. It shows us how human beings can persevere and grow through seemingly insurmountable opposition. It shows us a unique view on the difficulties faces by women at this time. Whether you are a fan of Charlotte Bronte or simply a lover of literature, The Professor is a book that I would highly recommend!
