Cold War (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

A Brilliantly Poetic and Political Romeo And Juliet
A superb instant classic of the bittersweet, passionate love between a student of folk music and young female singer. Their lives divided by post-war European borders. A genuine and simple romance complicated by politics and class structure. Her Eastern European traditional dress and song at country festivals and communist posters clearly clashing with the suit and tie filled jazz clubs and general sense of intellectual freedom of Paris in his life. Filmed in a post-modern style, with beautiful B/W photography, emphasis on music and culture, and brilliant use of symbolism, this is very similar to the artistic films of the late 1950's -early 1960's Europe, with minor tailoring for a modern audience. A rare treat and highly recommended. The Criterion Collection Blu Ray contains interviews on the making of the film.

Demonstrates the morphing of the 50s into the 60s and more.
I think this film earned its prizes. All these. years later, it is not easy to create the Cold War world - to communicate its unique powers and weaknesses and its passions good and evil. One love story is our conduit to the understanding of those murky times. The black and white says so much!WWII was done but this second "voyna" - amongst a humanity beyond exhaustion and horror from the holocaust, and striving for better in a climate of collateral madness from earlier days.Even the colorful joyful folk music events took place under the cloud of Stalin and Lenin's reigns. And our lovers are only human and not really able to navigate those days and win, except in their commitment to one another...and maybe that's enough to rebuild a better future. The story is said to be a loose biopic of the creator's parents, the proof that some good always comes from the good love in a life.

Inspiring, breath-taking cinema at ITS FINEST
It doesn't happen every year or every other year, maybe once or twice in years, but a filmmaker will produce a work so stunning, so original, yet so accessible that it has the charm, beauty, and depth to recalibrate the senses of a filmmaker, to suggest that there is still new places to go with cinema while telling a story about love and humanity and the cost to retain both. This film does that. You'll want to become a filmmaker after witnessing this revelation.

Solid 4 // Epic in scope, short in length
The trailer for Cold War suggests a languid, intimate romance set to a series of shuffling cool-jazz ballads. The film itself, however, delivers something much wider and surprisingly ambitious in scope. It's an epic, decades-spanning romance told in an incredibly tight hour-and-a-half. The passionate romance suggested by the trailer is certainly at the core, but layered around it are themes of obsession, disordered personality, art vs. politics, nationalism, classism, exploitation, and tyranny. The film accomplishes so much in such a short period of time that it's hard not to marvel at it, even if the break-neck pacing can be a bit emotionally distancing. Strip away the sociopolitical commentary and what you're left with is a powerful exploration of the pleasures and dangers of all-consuming love. See it for the unique structure, gorgeous cinematography, rich music, and thematic heft.Solid 4/5

Big Disappointment
After reading so many positive film reviews and seeing it appear in the Criterion collection, I bought the Blu-ray thinking I was in for a wonderful treat. Big disappointment. Dull, choppy, and abrupt transitions between the years. Moreover, the description of this movie on the Blu-ray case as a "sweeping, delirious romance", "timeless", and "heart-stoppingly grand vision of star-crossed love" is a gross and shameless exaggeration. I found zero chemistry between Wiktor and Zula. What they found so intriguing in each other in separate episodes over the years eludes me. Zula's frequent petulance and Wiktor's striking her in the face had me yelling at the screen - Please, break up and never see each other again! The final scenes of self-sacrifice made no sense to me, but at least they granted my wish that the movie would end. Only positive of the film would be cinematography and the effective use of black and white film. This movie is being tossed in the Goodwill pile.

Best movie of 2019!
On my book, Cold War is the best movie of 2019. Cold War is the very gripping story of a couple of Polish musicians and of their struggles to balance their love, their expectations, their fears, and their integrity in the divided Europe of the cold war. This a story without a happy ending; it is about making choices and paying a very heavy price for it. This black and white movie, filmed with a single camera, is technically very interesting, and the music brings back the memory of a divided and diverse world. Superb!
