Chaotic excellence
Love the absolute heart pouring creativity that is energetically jumping off of every page. Frank offers a deep, unadulterated look into his process from random sketches, negatives, and magazine cutouts peppering the page, sometimes even leaving the scanned image reversed, to fully rendered portraits that are captivating to say the least. No words, no dates, no fluff, just art and raw emotion. Thanks Frank. I’ll treasure this! It has already helped me explore my creative process even deeper.

An amazing example of creativity and art
Frank took that shot but you just didn’t know it. Not only is he an amazing photographer he’s an amazing creator and it’s shown in this book. His collages/journal pages take photography into the dark alley and emerge as a new form of art.

Outstanding as a Retrospective: Significant Overlap with Website
Longtime fan of Ockenfels work. Surprised at the heavy overlap between his web site and this monograph. Nice to have a tangible version of his work but be prepared to see very little new photography. In terms of fresh material, the emphasis here is on drawings and notebooks.

more drawing than photography
This is a tough one. Im a big fan of Ockenfels' iconic photography work in the music and film industries, and that is what I thought this large volume would focus on. Instead, its largely centered on collage pages from his personal journal / sketchbook. While that work is good, its not really what I was hoping for as the focus of a first book, after waiting for years for him to finally put one out. It feels like the photography plays a supporting role here, but isnt exactly the focus. The book itself is very well done, its just not filled with the sorts of images I was hoping for. It feels like more like a sketch pad with the added element of photography than a book about his photography. I hesitate to say Im disappointed because its very well done, its just not as photo-heavy as I was hoping for.

Great book. Needs better packaging.
Love FWO3! The book is big and super nice. Worth the price. However, it arrived packaged only in a thinnish brown envelope. The book has a thick cardboard type cover and the book covers and pages were smooshed in the corners and the covers had indented scratches/marks on it. Probably should be shipped in an actual box with some added protection, especially for a coffee table type book.
