Miyabi Andon has been recognized an official Suruga basketry producer in 1973 by the Japanese government. Suruga bamboo basketry from Shizuoka prefecture is different from most other bamboo basketry in Japan. It is unique for using round splints of bamboo without the skin being shaved off. It dates back to the beginning of the Edo period (1600 - 1868) when warriors almost exclusively made bamboo goods as a side job in more peaceful times. Being located on the highly frequented Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto Suruga basketry became very popular as a souvenir for travelers.
