Season Black Capelin Caviar From Iceland, 3.5 ounce

For the price, this stuff is pretty decent
For the price, this stuff is pretty decent. Better than the ultra cheap Capelin and Lumpfish caviars from Plaza. It's still nowhere near as tasty as a more pricey Hackleback or another American sturgeon caviar. This stuff is the same as Masago roe that's used in sushi restaurants. You may find it in other colors and it's natural color orange in your local Japanese grocery at about the same price per oz. It is often advertised as fresh at these stores but is usually shipped frozen and repackaged. In the overall picture, this stuff rates a 3 star but, the 4 stars was attributed for the good bang for the buck factor. If you want the flavor of the really good stuff...be prepared to pay for it.

I happen to like tobiko/masago, but in this context
Is it edible? Yes. Do you *want* to eat it though? That depends on your tastes. For me, it’s a definitive “No.”In hindsight, I should have looked up “capelin.” A quick search would have yielded information that would have prevented me from ordering this product. It’s essentially tobiko—those familiar with sushi would recognize this roe as as the crunchy, brightly orange-colored roe that adorns many sushi rolls. This product is dyed “black,” and in fact...looks blue-ish in most light. If you take a spoonful and drop it in water, there is an immediate blue halo of dye that colors the surrounding water.I happen to like tobiko/masago, but in this context, I would prefer to spend a bit more and order bowfin caviar.

Capelin Black Caviar from Iceland
I've lost track how much of this I've ordered. great tasting Caviar for those of us with champagne taste on beer budgets. Fortunately for me, most of my family and friends don't care for Caviar. Caviar is a very healthy food. I sure like it. Out of the jar, or with cream cheese and crackers. With some good Nova Scotia Salmon. So many ways you can enjoy Caviar. Give this a try. This a small bead, mild flavored black Caviar.

Bland, bitter, overpriced for cheap caviar
Teeny tiny fish eggs. This capelin caviar has an incredibly mild taste, to the point that it almost doesn't taste like caviar. The Season brand has a metallic, almost bitter aftertaste that I do not enjoy. I bought a shelf-stable lumpfish caviar at my grocery store that has a lot more flavor and tastes better and fresher. One of my cats even prefers the lumpfish caviar and refuses this capelin caviar. She normally doesn't display such a discerning palate so I'm inclined to trust her on this one.

Like eating food coloring
This tastes really odd, not a clean and fresh flavor. I even tried rinsing some and I was shocked at how much coloring came out into the water. I rinsed it 7 times and the water left back was still rich with the blue dye while the eggs were still black in color! I can't imagine how much dye seeped into the actual eggs and even after all the rinsing it still tasted terrible. Never buying this again.

Whaddya Want for Under $20.00 ??
For the money, this Icelandic roe is quite enjoyable. I serve it with blinis, creme fraiche, and some finely chopped hardboiled egg and Bermuda onion. No, it isn't Osetra, but the caviar snobs who are giving this product a single star are laughable. You are looking for Sevruga at fourteen bucks for three ounces???? For hoity-toity, see-up-your-nostrils perfection, get up off your wallets and spend $1,200.00 to $3,000.00 for the same sized jar!Yes, these eggs are small and they crunch. So what? The flavor is very pleasant and well-balanced with just the right amount of saltiness. The crunch is not "gritty" at all. Rather, it is the tiny, firm eggs popping. I have served this roe with good quality Champagne, and my guests have enjoyed it immensely. And these people eat Beluga!

Product tasted fine for the price. Vendor related issues.
Product is fine as a cheap caviar. I thought it tasted better than the price would lead one to expect. I ordered two 3.5 oz. jars and they shipped from different locations. 1 was 3.5 oz. and 2 months past expiration date. the next jar was not expired but it was smaller (I think it was 2 oz.) and arrived a day later. Overall not a very good performance by the vendor.

Total Rip Off
I love the taste, saltiness and texture of this product and have bought a considerable amount of it....But - a year or so ago this stuff was about $19 for four 3.5 oz. jars, now, if even available is nearly four - five times the price. No way. You lost me as a customer.
