It is from China. Despite the claim they are handmade, I doubt it as I've ordered various sizes of different designs and they are exactly alike. They are not akin to the old-fashioned style where the crochet thread is much finer. In comparison these are a thicker yarn which gives them a more casual and country look. They do work for what they are intended and they wash quite well. If they have a stain, I treat them the same way I treat other cotton products. On some occasions I will add just a small amount of bleach to the water but only if I wash them by hand so I can keep an eye on it to make sure they don't have too much. Ordinarily I wash them with my other whites and lay them out to dry, stretching them back to size. I also starch and press them from time to time to give them a crisper cleaner presentation. All in all, they are pretty hardy - one of the very rare notions made in China that doesn't break, fall apart, or appear contrary to the photos like so many other imports.
