did it come with the cannister?

No, the leaf canister was not included.

Does anyone know for sure exactly how much hose?

I just checked and measured. Mine came with 12 hose sections. Each section is 39" (ie 1 meter). However when you connect them together you lose 2"-3". So the total usable length is about 36' - 37'.

Can you leave this device in the pool indefinitely or will the chlorine/water/etc prematurely corrode it's components with prolonged exposure?

Yes you can leave it in ...I.m in Florida and I too have a salt water pool. I don't remember when I bought it but it is definitely well over 6 years and I never take it out. It stays in the pool 24/7 and my pool runs for 7hr a day and it is in direct sun light. I have a concrete pool and the only parts I replaced once is the rubber circular seal with the fingers on it and the foot that it mounts to because of wear against the concrete. It served me well and even though it is still working, it is old and worn, I am going to buy a new unit because my hoses need to be replaced and good quality hose cost around $15 and I need 10. So instead of spending $160 just on hoses I rather spend the extra $90 and get everything new..
