How long can the leaves remain in the tank?

I leave mine in until they deteriorate. My shrimp eats it in the shrimp tank. In my Betta tank, my snails eat it. The more it breaks down the more beneficial it is to your water. The more tannins you get. You can remove it when it starts deteriorating if you want though.

This doesn't have to coincide with water changes. Most aquarium species that like these almond leaves come from a brackish water environment, and the antibiotic effects of the tannins in the leaves make it so you don't have to change the water as often, unless you have goldfish.

Do you guys boil the leaves before you ship them out scared for unwanted life on the leaf?
