Tells you whether you need antibiotics
As someone with a compromised immune system who has repeated infections, I sometimes have rather active discussions with doctors about whether I need antibiotics for persistent infections.GPs work on the basis that most throat infections are viral rather than bacterial, so normal self care and pain relief is appropriate. This kind of test is rarely recommended on the NHS, but can resolve such arguments.I am keeping it in my armoury. The test came with 15 months ahead, so it can sit there waiting for a troublesome infection.

Straightforward Strep A test
This is a test for strep A, very useful to tell if you need to get your child to the GP whenever they get a sore throoat (which is often!).As a point of referrence, I am a veterinary surgeon and my wife is a NHS nurse so we are quite familiar with such tests - I guess after the COVID pandemic everyone is to some extend. I cannot attest to the actual sensitivity and specifity of the test, that would require a proper clinical research setting which is not the point of the review. Having had multiple strep A for the kids, I can say this looks almost identical to the ones our GP uses. There is only one test in the box, the instructions are very well written (I am fluent in english, french, greek and italian) and checked all of them - although greek is missing. It takes about 15 minutes from start to finish to get a result and it is easy to read.All-in-all, a useful thing to have around in the cupboard if you have toddlers.

Very innacurate
I bought 2 of these kits as both me and my husband had a sore throat and we didn’t want to ask for antibiotics unless we really had to. Mine showed a positive e result for strep a. My husband’s gave a negative result. My husband had a swab done by the GP and it turns out it was positive for strep a. So his test with this kit showed a false negative. Hard to trust.
