The Fat Black Woman's Poems: From the winner of the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry 2021 (Virago Poets)

This is the sort of book I am glad that my university course made me read as I know that I would never have picked it up otherwise. When I first started reading the poems I was indifferent, but the more I read the more I liked them. On their own the poems are fine, but they work much better united in a collection. I wouldn't mark this collection as a favourite, however I found it hard not to like the often humorous and deceptively simple poems which have a real honesty. I don't 'relate' to the poems, but still really enjoyed them. I've had this book for a few years and still open it up to read again.

I bought this book because it was required reading for my English Literature degree but I love it so much I will keep it unlike some of the other books that I will be reselling.Grace Nichols uses poetry vibrant with imagery of culture, colors and fills the pages with life. You gain a sense of how she feels the duality derived from living in two cultures. She also challenges the usual ideas of what beauty is.This was so worth reading and will read more by this author.

Nichol's poetry is rich in imagery and emotional content. It's great poetry for people looking for something outside of the more traditional fare.
