Great book for struggling readers
While I can't give this book full credit for my son's reading turn around, I can give this book a LOT of credit. I bought this book at the end of Nov 2015. My 1st grade son was reading below grade level, struggling with the basics, and had ZERO interest in reading, trying to read, or anything to do with reading. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle. He attended a special reading class at school where he got more one-on-one assistance. This is the other part of his success to which I need to give credit. So at the end of November, I read through the book and became familiar with the author's methods, ideas about learning to read, and how to go about teaching the child to read as a parent who has no training, This book gave me so many ideas on how to get concepts across to my son in the half hour we had each day and also how to incorporate lessons in throughout our day. For instance, my son had NO idea how to rhyme, so when we were driving in the car, I'd tell him to give me words that rhymed with it and then we would work on putting all kinds of different letters in front of it--even if they weren't real words--I didn't care as long as he was getting the concept of rhyme. Anyway, after assessing my son through the book's assessment test, he was between a a level 1 and level 2 reader. We got down to business and worked hard. He was VERY resistant at first and the lessons the first few weeks weren't a whole lot of fun and had to be broken up into 10 minute segments. By the end, our sessions were only taking 15 minutes and he was eager to show me what he knew. By the end of January 2016 (2 months--not gonna lie, they felt like long months in some ways), my son is now reading at grade level, asks for me to take him to the library to find chapter books, and says that reading and writing are now his favorite two subjects--which pleases me to no end since reading is one of my favorite activities! I am so, so, so impressed with all this book did for us. We definitely had to work for it and put in the time, in addition to what the school was doing, but it was well worth it. I've now got a son who is confident in his skill as a reader and wants to do it all the time! I would recommend this book through and through to anyone who has a struggling reader...as long as you're willing to put in the time, deal with the frustrations of your child--and sometimes you, and the support for what is a struggle and unenjoyable to your pupil. I am forever a believer in Peggy Wilber's methods for rescuing a struggling reader!

Impressive
I have been using this book for about a month now with my 7 year old. At first I was a little put off by the bouncing from chapter to chapter. But it is easy, very easy to use. I really like and appreciate the great advice the author give. Some things that seem so little and perhaps not important to the average parent (like have them say the first two sounds in a word together) really help. I am glad I purchased it.As a note...we homeschool and I think this book is good to offer as a foundation for those moms who want to go back and review with their children. It could be used with a phonics approach also for a stand alone program. I have successfully taught another child to read using another curriculum, but after using yet another curricula with my 7 year old last year, we were behind and not making progress. This book was very good for moving us past the issues we encountered.

highly recommend for struggling beginner readers
I bought this book after an elementary teacher friend of mine referred it to me. My oldest son is in kindergarten and struggling to grasp phonics and letters in general due to his maturity (young 5 due to summer birthday) and a delayed speech issue that is still being worked on. The book was very easy/fast reading for me and made so much sense I wanted to smack myself for not already knowing what it was telling me. I put it into practice after I completed my part and would you believe I had my son reading his very first book the same day I worked with him! No it wasn't a chapter book it was a very beginner reading book but it was reading none-the-less and it boosted his self confidence more than I would have ever thought possible. He's showed tremendous progress in school as well and I can not be more happy.I had been struggling trying to work with him. Lack of patience was killing our homework relationship. Since reading this book even I have learned and have developed better patience not only with reading but math, counting ... anything homework!! I'm so proud of my son, I'm even proud of what I learned/put into practice too.If there's anything better out there, I can't begin to imagine what it would be!!!

This book is the help I have been searching for...
I love this book. I never write reviews, but I felt the need to write this one. This book is really good. I am a Mom who has a second grade son who is not reading at a level that I am comfortable with. Although, he is classified by the school as "average" or "slightly below average", he is still struggling with fluency and comprehension. Because he is average, he isn't getting the additional help that I know that he needs to be ready to enter third grade. This book has laid out the gameplan that I need to help my son succeed AND IT IS WORKING! This book is written to help kids at three different levels, so I am also using it to also help my very bright kindergartener learn to read at an even more effective and rapid rate. It is a lot of hard work for you and your child, but it is worth it. This book is definitely worth your time and money.

This book helped me soMuch . Like any other parent I was getting frustrated giving my son books to read and that was it . Frustration set in . This book helps you break it down and the kids really get it . My son move up two letter levels in two weeks , after months of staying at a level . Sometimes breaking things down and giving kids fun things to do really helps . My son started to love reading because of this book . Even if you don't use the techniques she gives you ways to understand what you are doing wrong . Worth it ! Highly recommend this book !

A helpful tool
Of the several resources I gathered to help me and my first grade granddaughter, this is the one I saved. There are helpful tests provided to determine current reading level and to assist with developing a strategy. It also covers the behaviors to expect from a struggling reader. No they aren't lazy, or necessarily hyper. Trying to read is somewhat punishing and they'll do almost anything to avoid it, including multiple trips to the restroom. An excellent reference. Time for me to review it again myself.

It does exactly what it claims
My child was struggling with reading, dropping further behind the rest of his class,(he was nearly 7 when i bought this.) After round 3 or 4 weeks of using the guidelines and short lessons within this book, my child went up a level, and not long after that, another level. He hates it, but it does work. Some of my friends who's children have similar problems have now purchased this after my recommendation, and they have reported good results also.

Excellent!
J'aurai aimé avoir ce livre dès la maternelle de mon enfant. Il m'a aidé à comprendre mon rôle de parent et ce que je pouvais faire pour aider celui-ci pour son apprentissage de la lecture.
