This is an absolute no-brainer Prime lens purchase for the a6300
When I saw the difference in quality this lens had over my kit lens when shooting portraits, I became a prime lens believer. It's simply unbelievable when I shoot a portrait from 10 ft and can zoom in to count the pores on the tip of the subjects nose. But its not just the outstanding detail and bokeh this lens provides - because of its aperture, focusing speed and OSS, I can get a lot of lazily one-handed burst shots (which I do ALOT) come out great than with the kit lens. 1.8-3.5 doesn't sound like much, but its over TWICE as much light - its a huge difference. But here's the deal-sealer: its a steal at this price and you aren't going to get a better prime lens (much less with OSS and advanced/quiet autofocus for video) at this price or close to it.Downsides - its much bigger and heavier than the kit lens, or Sony's other (terrible) 50mm 1.8, and I had to get it in silver because trying to find the black in stock is nearly impossible. Also, since the a6300 is aps-c, the effective focal length in 35mm is ~75mm, which makes this lens of extremely limited use indoors.Today I brought my kids to their first day of school, and since we would be inside, I used the kit zoom for wide-angle, and immediately regretted it. I can't even look at pictures shot with the kit lens unless they were taken outside on a sunny day. This lens has made me less careful with controls, so I wind up screwing up shots with the kit lens. While it would be a challenge in an apartment with small rooms, I could have easily made this lens work in a larger schoolroom and would have been much happier with the results.Stop tabbing back and forth between the other lenses and get this one.

Great for portraits and low light shots when a zoom is just too slow
I am a long time fan of Sony NEX cameras, and I have owned and used many of the Sony brand E-mount lenses available for the NEX cameras, including the Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle, the SEL1855 E-mount 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS, and the SEL55210 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3. All those lenses have produced great pictures, especially when using RAW output corrected for distortion and chromatic aberrations through software such as Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom. When using the JPG mode the more recent NEX cameras, such as the NEX-5N and NEX-7, will, if the firmware has been updated, make a lot of those same corrections internally and automatically apply the corrections to the saved JPG images. The only draw back to the zoom lenses of course is that they are slow. Still, for low light level work, the use of a so-so slow lens with vibration stabilization will usually beat an optically much better fast lens that does not support stabilization. So I was interested to try the Sony SEL50F18 50mm f/1.8 for low light work. The extra lens speed allows for the use of a lower ISO, and the net gain in image qaulity is worth the cost to use of a fast lens. The lens has been great for work in low light, and the focal length has been perfect for close-ups of architectural details and art objects. If a photographer shoots in RAW, and uses Adobe Camera RAW or Lightroom to correct for lens distortions via software lens profiles, and to correct for chromatic aberration, or if the photographer shoots in JPG and uses the NEX camera's internal software corrections, then the few weak points of the lens are effectively canceled out. I have been very happy with my Sony SEL50F18 50mm f/1.8, and plan to use it often on my next project. RECOMMENDED.

High Quality, Sharp, and Impressive Bokeh
This is by far my favorite lens. I am an amateur photographer and this lens is able to capture most of the shots I want to take including portraits, landscapes (yes), and still-life.That being said, I use this lens about 90% of the time. You might say, hey this is a portrait lens you can't use it for something like street photography, or still life, or landscape shots. I'm here to tell you that you can and the quality of the photos will more than make up for the extra time it takes to frame the shot.Pros- F 1.8 produces some incredible bokeh and really focuses on your subject- Fast lens and is solid for low light situations- Very compact and light, perfect for travel or extended photo sessions- Versatile. After using it consistently it was rare I had to change lenses to get a shot I wantedCons- Crop factor (effectively 75mm) makes it difficult in tight quarters to frame shots. It may be hard to frame an entire subject in close quarters- There is some noticeable chromatic aberration, seen as mostly blue outline around subjects, around the F2s and down to F1.8. Some of it can be mitigated but it will still show- The minimum auto-focus range is slightly further than I like, often times it's difficult to focus on objects very close, within about a foot when it seems capable

Can it get any better?
I was on the fence about ordering another lens for my camera after having spent $600 bucks on a mirrorless dslr. I'm very new to photography, like just-bought-my-first-dslr-a-week-ago new. This lens was talked up by Tony Northrup when I was watching his tutorial on the Sony Alpha a6000 (the camera I bought). I found a used/refurbished one from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $100 less than the listed price for a new one. And WOW! My pictures look like I've been practicing photography for years...(at least that's what I think). I think the best thing is it really takes the guess work out of finding the right settings. It just seems to know. I've been doing a lot of picture taking of my dog and random things, and this lens is giving me a lot of practice with focusing, but regardless of how I focus, each picture looks intentional despite how out of focus some aspects are. If you look at the pictures I attached you'll see what I mean. I'm sure I sound like a total amateur in this review, but if you're anything like me in regards to your picture taking skills, you will probably fall in love with this lens.
