Q: Are both sides of the jaw electrically connected to the cable? (unbelievably, many cables have only one side of the jaw connected to the cable!)

They seem very robust and should be more than ample for the average family car. I've never seen jump leads (which I think you are describing) with wires to both sides of the jaws, sounds like something you would jump start a tank with and not something you could buy for 20 quid or so.
