hi - yes, the hole in the lid is always open. Sadly, having the straw in the hole isn’t enough to cover the hole completely. I’ve had a few water spills when bending over with the cup in my hand where water came out of the hole. I love the cup, but it’s probably not the best cup to put a drink in and then put in your beach bag - it will spill Hope this helps!

Q: Can you fit 12mm straw in straw hole?

12mm is about 15/32 of an inch in diameter. That is a big straw. My answer is yes but tight. The tumbler comes with 2 large diameter metal straws and 2 plastic straws. Plus 2 cleaning tools. I use the bent metal straw ever since my purchase. I love my Tumbler, my cold drink never gets warm
