The middle piece is the unit itself.

Q: What are the connectors made of? Most of my previous ones, had a plastic interface which snaps on usage

If you want to adjust the size, because it is very large, you will need to use the small Enclosed tool to remove pins & then reuse the tool once more to reinsert pins to reattach links.
