Great gift
Having bought this for an art lover of Vermeer I was tempted to dip in and leaf through the text and pictures and it did not dissapoint. It has a good balance of illustrations combined with an informative text. A good size and fairly priced. I'd recommend

Almost...but not quite
Bought this as a present for my wife who loves Vermeer's work. The book is well-written, the quality of reproduction is fine, the scope of the treatment is comprehensive, and it is a solid and resilient item to handle. And don't get me wrong, the artwork does come alive on the page. What's not to like? Yup, that is the conundrum. And the answer is obvious: it is too small. The format, no doubt down to budgetary considerations, is simply too miserly to allow the reader to absorb the full impact of Vermeer's masterpieces. Perhaps that's the point. Perhaps if you are going to really get to grips with this art, you need to visit the galleries where they are displayed.Make the book two inches taller and wider, and now you'd be talking.

Beautiful book
The quality of the reproductions is excellent. Unfortunately the paper sleeve arrived torn which is a shame, presumably due to poor packaging. I cannot comment on the quality of the text as have not had time to read as yet, hopefully soon.

Comparison with the T&H exhibition catalogue inevitable.
Somebody recommended this as an alternative to the rather disappointing T&H exhibition catalogue. I agree. The quality of the illustrations here is a vast improvement. If you’ve got the money, buy them both, the catalogue for the texts, otherwise this will make a fine buy at the price of a recent novel.
