Both Dark and Fun
This is the first novel I have read from Graham Brack and I look forward to more from his pen. The novel continues a long line of novels that feature a grouchy and slovenly detective who is nevertheless brilliant. Joef Slonsky definitely does not follow the rules as the final scene reveals, but he has a wonderful innate sense of justice. Much of the humor comes from his relationship ship with his innocent sergeant and with his bumbling superiors in the police department. There are also interesting reflections on the Czech political scene. The book is well written and creates an engaging world view. Recommended.

Crisply written page-turner with dark humor and post-Soviet charm
It does not take long to adore Detective Slonsky. Part cynic, part idealist, and part lazy slob, he and the other memorable and engaging characters drive a well-paced and exquisitely tangled murder mystery to an unexpected but fitting conclusion. The tone and setting are a perfect balance of British humor and East European resilience. Can't wait for the next book!

Unusual detective mystery
A fascinating grungy Czech detective exchanges clever repartee with his young trainee, while piecing together intriguing clues for solving a murder case. I look forward to hearing more from this author about Detective Slonsky.

Highly Recommended
I generally don't choose books with "cutesy" names, but the name of this book was well past cute and into "outrageous", so I thought I would give it a shot. I am very glad I did.A tale that begins as a farce takes a strong and serious turn late in the story, with ruminations over the Prague Spring (when the Czechs stepped out from under Soviet domination - for just a brief moment in time.) The impact of the change from, and back to, communism becomes central to two men who each lived through it, although on different sides. This is not a dark book; quite the contrary, I laughed out loud many times as I read. But the book is not frivolous, either. An engrossing read, which kept me up until the wee hours of the morning.I hope there are more of these to come from Mr. Brack.
