a nice addition to the Shimano range
Used only once, but found to a very smooth small reel ideal for course fishing, a nice addition to the Shimano range.

A solidly built reel
This looks and feels a solidly built reel, and instructions indicate that it is intended for both salt & fresh water. It comes with a spare spool.I bought this Shimano Catana 4000 FC as a backup to my recently bought Shimano Exage 4000 FD. I've only fished with the Exage so far -spinning and light bait fishing from rocks- and the Catana is as yet unused, so the following is just a physical comparison between the two. Both are front drag reels and very similar in size, although the Catana is a few mm wider in all directions. They have almost the same amount of metal & plastic in the same places. The Catana is slightly more old-fashioned looking and at 350g is 25g heavier (I couldn't tell until I weighed them), but it does feel stiffer to crank and it whirrs audibly. Both are very well balanced, but if I spin the handle and let go, the Catana only spin on another 4 or 5 times. The Exage will spin on 10 times or more. The Exage is silent and there is almost no resistance when turning the handle.Hopefully the Catana will loosen up with use, but the Exage was like that from new.Is the Exage worth almost exactly twice the price?...not sure, but the no-resistance feel in use is great. For all-day spinning the Catana might be more tiring. I'll try to add to this review after an on-shore comparison.
