Amazing lens at an affordable price.
I love this lens. As a hobbyist I like an affordable FX lens that is of pro-grade quality. I wanted the 24-70 f2.8, but I could not justify the cost. Then I bought this lens. I have been using this lens for 3 months and it has performed well at all focal lengths with my D610. Image quality is amazing and it is tack sharp. Some people complain of haziness but a few picture control adjustments on contrast and saturation and you're good to go.Pros: affordable, tack sharp, great IQ, focuses quickly, build quality is good (all-metal), despite for being a push-pull lens there is no lens creep (my copy at least)Cons: A little bit heavy since it's all metal, noisy focus but not unbearable, lens hood is pretty much useless so a filter is recommended when used outdoors. Some flaring. With the images that I get all the time with this lens, I can do minimal editing on my iPad Pro using just the free version apps of Adobe PS Express, Lightroom and Photoshop Fix. I am happy with the results.

It's now my favorite lens
I paid a little more than they go for on eBay. However, this lens is now my favorite lens. even though it's an old lens, it renders color like no other lens I have, including a Nikkor 50mm, Tamron 70-200mm. The macro feature is very useful. Some might say that it isn't a true macro. However, I can get within a couple of inches from an object and that is close enough for me. It's built like a tank, it's very sharp and I love the push/pull way you zoom with this lens. The only thing I don't love, but also don't mind, is that the outer lens turns when it focuses. It's not an internal focus (IF) lens. Also, this lens definitely flares quicker than any other lens I own. However, that's an easy fix, using your hand as a visor. That said, I haven't had any issues with these characteristics or any other. They sure knew how to make them, back then.

Great Lens
This is a great pro level lens back during it's time. If you are on a tight budget but what something that has a F2.8 aperature. This is the lens for you. If you look at the price of this lens in comparison to the Nikon 24-70mm F 2.8, there is a significant price difference. Although there are technology difference. I primarily use this lens on my Nikon D90 since it will not work on my D5000 or any lower level DSLR. Make sure you read up some reviews on this lens before you purchase it and make sure that this will have AF focusing on your camera.

Excellent condition used lens
High quality lens bought to replace one of the same model that broke. Discontinued model, can't get parts to fix them anymore. The item was used and described as in 'good' condition. It appears better than expected to my eye. Very minor cosmetic wear, no issues with glass. Very clean and operates smoothly.

The range for the Price! Excellent
I've purchased this lens 4 times now (selling it to friends and family with the thought of upgrading and it keeps ending up in my hands). The range for the price you can't beat it! It's a solid and trust worthy lens. Just make sure you buy one that has an accurate description! These old lenses are prone to fungus if not taken care of so watch for that! It's sharp and moderately fast (not lightning quick) and the Macro feature is more useful than you'd think!

Solid & well built--but heavy.
There aren't enough superlatives for the quality and sharpness of this lens or its performance with lower light situation. Almost every photo I've taken with it is very good and some are great. But there are two drawbacks to using this lens more often. The first is the weight of the lens itself. It's OK for using at home or for short periods elsewhere, but it is uncomfortably heavy to lug around for extended periods, to travel with, or even to hold steady for a long time. The second (and least important) is the fact the push/pull mechanism (which is more abrupt and feels less precise) in order to frame your image. It is not that difficult to do, but it's a distraction and a chore that I, who am pretty spoiled by more modern lenses, find a little annoying. Once it's on, I do it, but the thought that I'm going to have to do it is often a turn-off.The result is that, though this lens is notably better than my other options at this length, I often pass it up when choosing the lens I'm going to use on a given day.

If you don't get one you will be sorry!
I bought this used through Amazon about a month ago and am very pleased to have it. The seller only claimed it was in 'good' shape, which caused me a bit of worry. But There was even a small scratch on the rear element of the lens. After shooting with it on my D300s I have to say it is one of the finest pieces of glass I own. Ranks right up there with my 105 VR ED Macro, and the classic but wonderful 70-200 VR I -- all of which are f2.8. If you can find one snap it up -- I got mine for 320 USD, but now that I have used it I would pay half again or twice as much. This is great glass. read the reviews. Nikon discontinued it, but that neans nothing in terms of its great IQ and odd, but easy handling.

Amazing lens on the cheap. Cheaper than some kit lenses!
For those of us that don`t want to pay the price for the newer 24-70 f2.8 or the 28-70 f2.8 then this is the right lens for you. It is also significantly lighter and smaller than either of these two lens although you obvious lose some range on the backend. Optical quality is absolutely outstanding and the push pull zoom mechanism works great. Highly Recommended lens

Great Lens, AF can be tricky in low light ir tracking.
Slightly overpriced. Have seen this lens on other sites fir around £110 -£125 mark. The flare can be an issue, but can be utilised for stylisitc effect.Sharp when stopped down. Macro function is good. Lens is durable and solid build and reflected in its weight.Highly recommend in terms of value for money and image quality (I use on a FX camera).Shop around for price.

Superb Lens - A small piece of Nikon history
Update:3 November 2014I can no longer extend the zoom range on this lens. For the life of my i have no idea what has happened with this lens. It will not extend beyond 50mm and it is permanently stuck. From a personal perspective and experience, i will not be purchasing any came equipment 2nd hand unless I can inspect the goods before parting with my money. My initial review stands, in spite of the fact that I and some success with his lens, albeit limited. From now, I will stick to Nikon 1st generation, in the long run, it just isn't worth the aggravation.Nikkor 35-70mmI became attracted to this lens after reading Bryan Peterson's Field Guide on Photography. I was very excited and happy to receive this lens and considering this lens was first produced in the early 1990s it is built like a tank. On testing this lens on my D90, I was disappointed to find that many of my images had a ghost like foggy mist. After doing some research on the Internet, I discovered this particular lens is prone to ghosting and fogging due to condensation and corrosion.I felt it worth my while to investigate having this lens serviced and repaired. I contacted a reputable Nikon specialist who deal in such matters and they confirmed my research. The breakthrough was that the lens was serviced unfortunately, due to the age of the lens many of the spare parts are no longer available and consequently I could not have this lens thoroughly repaired. Nevertheless, this lens has been serviced and cleaned to a high standard and I have to say my images are coming out absolutely perfect - I couldn't be more delighted. As a matter of fact, the lens has been performing very well since I got it back 48 hours ago.The images, super tack sharp with a wonderful colour saturation. I have found that I have spent less time post processing than I normally would. One of the things I love about this lens is the focal length. Starting at 35mm with the additional reach up to 70mm with a constant aperture 2.8 throughout the zoom range makes this a perfect lens for street photography. Also, this lens is an FX lens and from what I discovered it weighs less than its full frame current equivalent the 24 - 70mm.So far, so good - the more I use this lens, the more it is growing on me- it is firmly attached to my D90.All things considered, in spite of the extra outlay for servicing this lens, I am very happy with it and I have a real sense of how popular this lens has been to many pro photographers since its initial release in the early 1990s. This lens is a piece of Nikon history and I am very happy with it.
