The only battery train that pushes and pulls
This engine is not the fastest - in fact it's quite slow. It's not the prettiest. It's not the most powerful. The switch on the top is a little fiddly. But there is one big plus compared to other battery engine - it has a magnet connector on the front of it. This means that not only can it pull cars around a track, but it can also also push, or in our case assist another battery train. My kids love to use another battery engine at the front of the train and then use this freight engine at the back to help the front engine get a large number of cars around the track, or up and over hills. It really works well. You can also arrange this engine in the middle of the train, having it assist by both pushing and pulling at the same time. You could also use a series of them throughout a really long train if you wanted.

Worth the money for Brio lover!
Battery operated engine is every Brio kid's dream. Just like in the video of "Jake's Trains" and my grandson loves it.

Best powered train for Brio
Bang for the buck, this model pulls the most, has magnets on front and back to lead and also to push as a Caboose, it has long battery life, and a simple toggle forward reverse on/off switch toddler get and large adult hands can maneuver easily. While most of Brio fails miserably, this is a sublime model amongst mostly duds.

Let's be fair to this little engine. . .
OK, let's be fair here. This is a very little engine. It runs on one (1) AA battery. It is a child's toy. Does it go fast? No. Is it supposed to go fast? Probably not (back to that child's toy thing). Should this little engine be expected to drag 20 cars up a vertical slope? No. That would be insane. So here is my two cents worth:This engine does what it is expected to do-- haul two or three small cars slowly along a wooden track (designed for children) and go over a moderate slope. If you want it to perform flawlessly all the time, you might want to forget the slope altogether. Either way, it does work well for what it was designed for. Now, if you want to make a larger train, than you simply pull a simple trick that Union Pacific does when they want to run a larger train-- add more locos. And yes, it does work. Now, I must admit, I am still a very big kid at heart and I got my train set for me, so I can invest in getting more locos for my track. So my train consist is hauling 9 fairly large cars with three locos-- two in the front and one pushing in the back. I do have a flat track with no slopes. The engines do struggle a little with it, but they do perform well. I am very satisfied with the performance of these little engines, especially considering what I am asking them to do.All in all, if you want a simple train hauling a few simple cars around a simple track, this should do for you. And you can always add to it. If you want a high performance train zooming around a complex track at break neck speeds, get a real model train set. Just be prepared to spend a lot more for it.

Great little battery powered engine
My toddler son got this as a birthday gift this year and has been obsessed with this train ever since. It takes one AA battery and when fresh this engine can pull quite a long train (we've been able to tow an additional 5 other boxcars up a hill with this engine). Even when the battery is not fresh, this little engine will still keep going for quite a while (had the same battery in for 2+ months) albeit slowly. In addition, this little train has been able to take quite a beating. My son likes to drive this "offroad" frequently and enjoys watching it roll off of the coffee table. Only two complaints I can think of: 1) his little fingers have trouble adjusting the switch so he needs to ask for help when we want to turn it off or on; 2) it requires a screwdriver to change the battery (though to be fair this could be seen as a safety feature as well). If you have a wooden train set I would highly recommend picking up this train. It adds a whole new element of fun to the experience!

MOST LOVED TOY
As a mom to five little ones, our Brio train set and all of its accessories have been our MOST used and MOST loved toy ever. I have a 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 year old and some one is ALWAYS creatively building and playing with the train set. The accessories are SO high quality and durable and well worth the price. The perfect gift!

Brio - the best
I have a Brio train set that I bought for my kids 35 years ago. Now my granddaughter plays with their set and I have added pieces - the recent one is this freight engine. I am happy that I can order them on Amazon instead of trying to find it in the few toy stores that are left. Brio makes toys that last!

Functional but underpowered
Classic design that has brought an old Brio set to life for my daughter. However it seems very underpowered compared to a classic/older one that our family had so a bit disappointed with that. Can only pull 2-3 carriages up a small bio ramp/hill vs the older one crushing it with 6-7.It is pricey too for what it is.
