comedy at its peak
Blackadder is undoubtely brilliant, that is common knowledge. Its the kind of thing that you could easily give anyone as a present and they would love it it is almost universal in its appeal.Im also ignoring the standard quality of the dvd that includes no extras or any of the specials but its worth it.It is also one of the top 4 television sitcoms ever (along with faulty towers, yes minister and father ted (which incidentally was robbed in the top 100 sitcoms because it wasnt made by the bbc like all the rest)Many people eschew the first series because it was not in the same stlye as the rest and those who ignore it saying it isnt as funny as the other or it just isnt funny are doing it a great injustice, here Blackadder is a snivelling, incompetant, annoying and pitiful wretch of a man, who is fortunate enough to be the son of richard of york (who was not killed in the tower and richard III was a good man not a murderer) who fought henry tudor at the battle of bosworth field (where richard was killed but richard of york became Richard IV) and won making blackadder a prince he was unfortunate enough to meet baldrick and percy who only add to his utter incompetance. The series is good and the jokes are funny but you have mostly no empathy whatsoever with edmund here yes he is surrounded by incometants like in the other series but is one also but they are genuinly funny. high points include the black seal and the archbishop both in which edmund seems to be much more of a schemer and closer to his other encarnations than at other points.Ive no need to say about blackadder 2 or blackadder goes forth everyone knows about them or should be ashamed they dont but in my opinion series 3 can be overlooked and the writing is as good as if not at point better either of two more popular series. Here blackadder reaches his pinacle as a schemer he is competant, mean, very funny , for example when he uses makes up words like contrafibularity to the dictionary writer or when he is in the hall waiting for the anouncement of the bi-electionBlackadder is the product of two quite frankly brilliant (at times) writers at their absolute zenith (neither have achieved shadow of what they acheived here since, i mean love actually vicar of dibley some musicals it pales in comparison) of their proffesion (the latter 3 series anyway ben elton did not write on the first and it shows)and most of all its fantastic and hilarious one of the very very few progammes that can constanly make you roar with laughter thoughout every episode however many times you watch them.

Brilliant comedy if you ignore the first series
Blackadder is quite possibly the funniest and wittiest comedy Britain has ever produced. Edmund Blackadder, with his sarcastic one-liners and constant scheming forms the crux of the series, and Rowan Atkinson is perfect in this role. His delivery of the lines and excellent comic timing really make the series; not to diminish hilarious performances from Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Tony Robinson, Tim McInnerny and Rik Mayall (look out for his two brief but brilliant appearances as FlashHeart.)The first series is pretty poor and Blackadder is not particularly funny as a snivelling wretch trying to worm his way up the social ladder. It is in the second series as a shrewd member of the Elizabethan court that he really comes into his own. Thanks to Ben Elton's input, having recently joined the writing team, Edmund becomes a sarcastic, clever and much funnier character. Blackadder's dim-witted friends Lord Percy and Baldrick provide the slap-stick humour. Baldrick's obsession with turnips, the ever changing size of Percy's ruff, Blackadder's expedition with Captain Rum and Lord FlashHeart's visit provide the highlights of this series. The third series, my personal favourite, is set in the Georgian period and Hugh Laurie shines as the Prince Regent. His stupidity, and the manifold ways Blackadder exploits this to take advantage of him, are always amusing. The series opens with a brilliant episode full of political intrigue courtesy of Blackadder and features Crazy Scottish McAdder and a superb turn by Stephen Fry as the mad Duke of Wellington. The fourth and final series is set in the trenches of the First World War. Stephen Fry plays comedy legend General Melchett with his snivelling aid Darling played by Tim McInnerny. Hugh Laurie plays the dim George and is particularly funny as the defence for Blackadder when he is court marshalled. FlashHeart also makes a great appearance in this series, the better of the two appearances. The last episode is very poignant as the characters go over the top and finally bow out.I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes classic British comedy. Though the DVD does not have any special features I don't think it really needs them, the comedy speaks for itself.

Funny very funny
What can I say Atkinson is a comedy genius, I love them all but Blackadder goes forth is my favourite. In my opinion very cleverly done to fit the humour in with the most poignant ending of a comedy I've seen.

excellent
Excellent.
