Amazon EssentialsMen's Slim-Fit Long-Sleeve Poplin Shirt
S**L
High quality, great fabric, unique patterns. Good fit for tall & slim.
CONTEXT: I'm female and have purchased four variations of the Amazon Essentials Poplin Shirt, striving for my best fit while taking advantage of sale prices to get my favorite colors/patterns. These include:- SM Women's Classic Fit ($15.30 for Lilac White Variegated Stripe, on 9/19/24),- XS Men's Regular-Fit ($10.55 for Lavender White Double Stripe, on 1/27/25),- SM Men's Slim-fit ($16.70 for Lavender White Double Stripe, on 1/27/25), and- XS Men's Slim-fit ($15.66 for Blue Checked, on 1/27).I'm 5'7", 120 lb, and slim through the body with narrow (for a woman) 36" hips, but somewhat broad-shouldered (for a woman) w/36" chest. I generally require a Women's Medium to fit my shoulders.SUMMARY: Quality is exceptional and consistent, for an inexpensive garment. I *love* the 100% cotton poplin fabric and the great selection of colors and unique, sometimes intricate patterns (see photos). Button placket, pockets and seams are sewn cleanly, with very good pattern matching. There are extra buttons, large and small, sewn to the interior side label, though this shirt doesn't have the small button at the collar. The shirt and sleeve length is generous, it seems to me, so even the Regular-fit shirts should fit most Tall Slim folks pretty well. Likewise, these might not be the best choice for folk who are both shorter and heavier/wider than 'average'.I plan to wear these casually, un-ironed, untucked, sleeves rolled up, in the SW FL sun, heat and humidity. They'd be great on the beach, or around town, but IMHO, they also are great for working in the yard or garage, if you don't mind them getting dirty. At these sale prices, I bought them to 'class up" my yardwork shirts and protect my arms from the sun, replacing my usual T-shirt. I don't care that the all-cotton fabric wrinkles; I care that it feels good and will become more like "an old friend" with every wash. If you wanted a "crisp" office look, you'd probably want spray starch and need a very hot iron. It's nice that the Amazon sizing seems fairly consistent from one shirt to the next of the same size and fit. Even my flannel Amazon Essentials shirt has the same fit on me in the XS Slim.SIZING NOTES.1. Regular-fit is not particularly baggy. It's actually a fairly trim fit, compared to most men's "Regular-fit" shirts, IMO. This is great news for me, as the baggy fit of most shirts, Men's and Women's, is a problem for me on shirts with the correct shoulder width.2. Surprisingly, XS Regular-fit is essentially the SAME SIZE as the SM Slim-fit, so order whichever is cheapest in the color you want. I held up the two "Lavender Double White Stripe" sizes I'd ordered and verified they have the same following dimensions:- Shoulder width (between the two sleeve seams),- Arm-hole circumference (where sleeve attaches to body),- Sleeve length, and- Body length. The only difference I could discern:- Sleeve width/circumference. The SM Slim-fit had a slightly slimmer sleeve width (just under 1/2 inch less in circumference most of the way down the sleeve, or a mere 1/4 inch slimmer comparing one flat sleeve against the other). Although I'd personally prefer a slimmer sleeve, I don't think the difference would be noticeable, so I kept the cheaper one and returned the other.- I did not specifically compare the neck circumferences, but they appear the same.3. The Men's XS Slim-Fit was the best fitting of all, being the narrowest in the body and hips, given the sizes I tried, including the Women's SM Regular-fit, which was a little too boxy in the body for me, despite the shoulders being a tad too small. The slimmer Women's sleeves were the only part that fit me better than the Men's XS Slim-fit.4. All the Men's sizes I tried were 1-2 inches longer, with longer sleeves, than the woman's, but that suited me fine. I might not like the extra length as much if I had to tuck them into my pants, but I don't plan too.FABRIC & COLORS: See my photos for the attractive "Blue Checked" pattern, which isn't represented well by the Amazon pictures, in my opinion. I thought it would be a basic fine-grid gingham, but it's more interesting and unique than that, given that each blue stripe going vertically or horizontally is actually made up of three stripes each: a thicker medium blue stripe flanked by narrower dark blue stripes. It's this unique detail in the striping that I really enjoy. Likewise, the Men's Lavender is not simply striped; it has a white *double-stripe* when you look closely. I don't think my photo does justice to the lavender color, which is just a wee bit brighter in good light. See also the unique striping of the (worn and wrinkled) Women's Lilac White Variegated Stripe, which has PERFECTLY LEVEL horizontal stripes at the back shoulder panel seam. I also show a picture comparing the two pale purples of the Men's and Women's shirts, which are diifferent, but both nice.PATTERNS & MATCHING AT SEAMS/POCKETS: I don't like certain of the larger plaids because they don't 'match up" well in the back, where the shoulder is sewn to the body, or they don't appear balanced relative to the center-line in the front. If there are larger white stripes in any pattern (eg, color "Navy Medium Plaid" on the product page), the white is prominent and pops (squint a little). It then bothers me that the pattern shifts/jumps at the button placket, so there's suddenly more or less space beween the prominant white stripes. This issue (which doesn't bother everyone, thank goodness) is usually visible in the amazon photos. That said, at the pocket, Amazon does a NEAR PERFECT job of matching stripes and patterns. (My photo includes the pockets of both shirts, and the pocket is nearly invisible on the Blue Checked.) They do a VERY GOOD but not always perfect job on the back shoulder panel, making sure the horizontal lines are perfectly "level". esp where it's sewn to the body. Only one of my three Amazonn poplin shirts (the Blue Checked) had a back shoulder panel that was slightly off-level, but the pattern wasn't big enough for this to catch one's eye. I'm including these comments for the people who feel compelled to straighten out picture frames that aren't hung level on the wall - haha.

Great Price and Great Quality!
Good quality, true to size, and the fabric is breathable. My man rolled up the sleeves and he looks great!

Slim fit!
Runs small. I didn’t realize when purchasing that this is a slim for shirt. Even with that knowledge, I think the shoulders are also a bit tighter than should be.

Perfect Fit, Sharp Look, Great Value!
As a 5'10" guy, finding a shirt that fits well off the rack can be hit or miss—but this one nailed it. The slim fit is tailored just right—not too snug around the chest or arms, and the length hits perfectly at the waist. The blue and white vertical stripes give it a clean, crisp look that works equally well for the office or a night out. The material is light, breathable, and comfortable all day. It irons easily, and even after a few washes, it still looks brand new with no fading or shrinking. At under $20, this shirt feels like a total steal. I’ve already added a couple more colors to my cart. If you’re around my size and looking for a great everyday button-up, I highly recommend giving this one a shot!

Perfectly fine basic shirt
This is a decent shirt for the price. The quality & the fit are good. The collar design isn’t my personal favorite & it lacks pockets for stays, which is a negative if you like to keep your collar sharp.

Nice shirts but the collars are a problem. Be prepared to iron after every wash.
Nice shirts that feel great and look nice. I ordered a few in different patterns. Unfortunately the collars are a big problem. I like cotton shirts that can be washed, dried, and promptly hung up with minimal effort. These are listed as 100% cotton so I figured they would be no problem like other brands (including some from Amazon bran). Unfortunately the collars will not stay put - they tend to warp and curl out of shape which requires ironing to get them straight again. Leaving them warped is not an option if you want to look professional so be prepared to iron after every wash. Disappointing. As others have mentioned there is no way to insert collar stays either. I hope Amazon makes changes to this shirt design by adding collar stays and/or buttons to the collar. Overall nice shirt, but requires extra time and effort to keep them looking professional. Won't buy more until they change the design to help with the collar issues. Rare miss from Amazon Essentials.
