You need ants for this to work
Buying live ants makes it easier unless you have a ton of ants. I bought this cause I had ants, then it got cold before it arrived and then went away, mostly. I caught about 10, poked 3-4 holes as instructed, and they’ve mostly stayed clustered. Long story short, I bought one of these a few years ago and put a bunch of ants in. They burrowed and it was awesome. They eat the ones that don’t make it if you know what I’m saying.

Beautiful farm - kids learned that ants really are communists
The ant farm itself is great. It's nice that it lights up and we like that we can see the tunnels from both sides of the farm. The only problem we encountered was that there wasn't a card or "coupon" in the box explaining how and where to get the ants. Luckily we live in the desert so we went down the street, found a harvester ant colony and caught 30 ants. We put them in the fridge for 5-10 minutes and then they were easy to put into the farm. It took the ants a day or two to get acclimated. Maybe it's because they are "wild" ants or maybe they unionized themselves on the way home, but only a few ants dig at a time while the rest of the ants do nothing. They just huddle around each other on the surface while 2-3 ants venture off to dig the tunnel. They dug down and created a large "room" and then all the ants went down there and hung out for a few days doing absolutely nothing. So strange. We're wondering if surrounding them with so much gel food gives them less intensive to dig? A couple of ants died and so they created a "cemetery" in one of the corners on the surface. That was fascinating.

Kids loved it
We bought this as a compromise gift for my son who wanted a pet turtle 😂The ants were easy to order and most arrived alive (though that's a completely unrelated purchase) so we started with close to 50 ants on August 16. We followed instructions and bored a few small holes and let the ants do the rest. the attached photo is Dec 12 when the last ant died. we did have to remove a good bit of the material the ants dug up as well as some of the dead bodies through the process, but overall a very easy process.I strongly warn against using the LED lights for very long. my son left them on overnight one day and the gel started to weep around the sides, ants were distressed and the overall colony was not thriving. we cleaned it up, aired them out and they were good as new.

Nope
Bought this afyer reading the reviews. Followed instructions to the letter. After 3 weeks we have had hardly any tunnels dug by our harvest ants (sold separately). They were all at the top dying and looking lethargic. During the first week one or two tunnels were dug and the ants digging died in them. Some of the other ants tried to retrieve them post mortem. Ant body part pieces were everywhere. My son thought they ate an ant or two, or juat destroyed them. My son decided their light get too hot so he doesnt leave them plugged in. The 2nd week, finally 2 tunnels dug to middle and bottom. At this time the power cord light connection became very touchy. Turned on and off easily from a gentle touch of the ant farm. Suddenly mold appeared and the live ones still hang out at the top looking slow and lethargic. I took the ants and gel out, cleaned, scraped, and added some sand, seeds, and cotton balls for water. These poor ants are constantly cleaning themselves. I don't have the right substrate or I would take the gel out completely. Shoping for a new antfarm because the ventilation on this one is severely lacking among all the other issues listed.

Ants cost extra
I returned this product after finding out when it arrived that it cost extra to get the ants for thru the mail. At the price of the product a coupon for ants and minimal shipping would have make this a keeper. But the shipping was very high.
