Do you leave it clamped to the car battery while you go start your car, or detach the clamps before starting car?

No, you have to keep the clamps connected until the car is started.

Is it safe to leave this in a car in summer?

Short answer - if you feel unsafe, don’t do it. Longer answer - this is my opinion / answer, not something I read in the directions or product documentation. I leave mine in my vehicle because it’s there as an insurance policy / emergency solution if my battery dies (or someone else’s battery dies). I live in Texas, and the summers are HOT, so I’ll assume the unit will need charged more often because the heat will drain it. If the question is “is there a danger to leaving this in my car”… I don’t know. I leave it in there because that’s what it’s for. I’ve considered grabbing it on the way out, and bringing it in when I arrive home, but that would quickly become a hassle. There may be some recommendations in the product spec sheet, or reach out to the manufacturer.
