Will these keep a mattress topper in place with the actual mattress ?

Yes. I attach them to the four corners of the mattress topper under the mattress and the topper stays in place.

Is there a trick to opening the clips?

No tricks, the holder straps use the same clips as used on suspenders.

My sheets are not long enough to go underneath the mattress. Would this still work?

They go under the matter but don't pull the sheet under, I have found them brilliant and I think you will find a gigantic improvement with your sheets

Sheet too big will they pull it in? Trying to use single fiuted on 2ft6 bed

Yes but it takes time to position the three clips and at each corner: one into the corner of the sheet, and the other two to about the mid point of a shorter and a longer side. Possibly worth it if mattress not too heavy but I resorted to buying a firmly all-around- elasticated sheet instead. Oh, but that would only work if it were the right size for the bed. The clips on elastic are probably the best bet for a bigger sheet on a smaller bed.
