Can these be used on balls with the needle?

First, let me say that I have not tried to measure ball pressure (I am a Patriots fan, so need I say more?) but you will need more than just a needle to do this. The gauge is designed to work with a self-sealing valve. A needle is an open hole to the outside. What you will need is a a tire valve extender. These have a seal at the valve stem end and threads on the other end to seal to the needle. The pressure gauge can then be applied to the valve stem end of the extender.

How long do batteries last and is it easy to replace them

Got mine in 2017 and still good. I keep it in my car maintenance kit in my car and use it maybe a handful of times a year though when checking pressure between seasons or testing bike tire pressures. Today I thought it was dead so I opened it up and ran the batteries through a voltmeter and they all read normal enough, aged but normal. Was looking for batteries on amazon and ran across a very helpful review. Sometimes the metal contact under the 2032 flattens and gives poor contact, making it seem dead. I just put 2-4 layers of paper behind the contact under the 2032 and good as new. The LEDs weren't even lighting up and now everything works, display/backlight and nozzle LED.

What kind of battery does this use and is it easily replaceable?

It uses one CR2032 battery and three AG13 batteries. Two small Philips head screws and it is open. The trigger button might fall off but it is simple to put back in place. I had to replace the CR2032 in one of mine today after maybe 6 months of use but the other two gauges are still working fine. Not at all that difficult to open and replace - took me more time to find my spare CR2032 batteries.

Does the reading stay lit when removed from the valve or does it immediately shut off?

The light stays on for 30 seconds.
