The diagram on the back seems to show that the switch is normally closed - even on the normally open switches. no pics of open ones or what?

The diagram on the plastic always shows the circuit going to the NC for both open and closed switches. You have to look at the where the prong is actually coming out. A normally open switch (like this) has the prong sticking out right next to the NO on the diagram on the back. A closed switch will have the same diagram on the back, but the actual prong will be sticking out directly next to the NC. Hope that clears up some confusion for some people.

What's the difference between this part, szm-v16-fa-63 and szm-v16-fd-63? both have same specs and are cross referenced to ge part no. wb24x829.

I don’t know exact answer, but these switches are pretty much the same. Mine needed 3 as well but only 1 was bad. So I bought 2 and replace 1. Test with multimeter for open & close. Sometimes you can take them apart & fix ( for a while). Best I can do for you.
