A surprisingly good read
We bought this more so as a 'coffee table' book. Something to dive into now and again at a random page, to look at some nice pictures and learn some trivia. However, I think it actually works even better as a cover to cover linear read; starting in the 50s and travelling through each distinct generation to the present day. There are some great stand alone essays in here; the frenzy of trying to score a goal on fifa, the cozy friendship of the speedrunning community, but above (or beneath) that is a great journey through technological leaps and developments of the console marketplace. Of giants coming into the fray and of oddities shining in the spotlight for brief moments but leaving important footprints for others to follow. The book does a great job of not getting weighed down by the sheer amount of hardware that was around in the early days too, the book cherry picks the main players giving assertive overviews, each from a different author providing their own personal insights and memories.Edit: I only have one minor criticism, that some of the pictures feel out of sync with the text in which you have to sometimes flick around to look at the hardware in question. The 3DO write up does not include a picture of the console which is odd as it is the only console to not feature the angled, visual overview.
