Does the battery only provide the digital display - in which case the upper part of the thermometer will continue to function without a battery ?

No both are powered. The older version had two separate systems glass thermometer and digital but it was not very good, the digital part clapped out on mine after about a year. This new one is a lot better but does not work without battery

Is it waterproof? Can we put it on an outside windowsill as the last one?

Well mine's just arrived and despite the Amazon description it clearly says on the box that it is NOT waterproof and should be kept away from rain, so how they have the cheek to say it Ok to use outdoors in the garden beggars belief.

Surprised it is not waterproof as states outside use, positioned in covered porch.

I have my thermometer in the community greenhouse , it’s been there for years & still working fine. Although it’s dry in there it can be quite humid . I’ve had no problems with it.

I'm sorry to say but the manufacturer used to have a good name hence my purchase of two different models and both failed within months. I will never buy any of their products again.
