You are correct. Almost all of the reed switches on Amazon universally have the NO/NC descriptions backwards. Even the guy who responded to you about his RV steps was mistaken as his application would require a normally closed switch (ie. door opening and removing the magnet would allow the current to flow). I think the big misunderstanding is these vendors (and some people) think the "normal" position is with a magnet adjacent the reed switch. It is not.

Q: Can this be used in a 12v application? I wanted to use ground to trigger a negative input(car alarm application)

Yes, I am also using it for 12V lights. You limit is going to be the 0.5amp load.

Q: Are these waterproof or at least water resistant?

Yes . It is water proof . Just only wires connection for sensor ( over 10'' long) must be in dry area.

Open and the light comes on, shut and it is off!

This functions exactly as I wanted. Open the door and just like the refrigerator, the light comes on. The double sided tape makes it really easy to install. Very inexpensive low voltage (12 volt RV) control is perfect. These are really small so can be installed in very minimal space.

If these would ship with a simple set of instructions that give wire colors relating to switch functions, it would save the installer some time and frustration. Also, it's nice that they supply attachment screws, it would have been even nicer if they were the correct type of screw. The encapsulated reed switches and magnets appear to be well made and they function great.

Failed

Failed after 1 week. I am. Installed on liftgate of truck, tested and 1 failed before it was fully installed. 2nd attempt installed tested lasted a week. Problem the sensor becomes very sporadic and sensitive and weak. The magnetic that comes with it can no longer trigger it. Put small tiny earth magnetic to see if that made a difference. It is only triggering sometimes. Disappointed in such a simple product.
