How do I remove lead residue from the in-built sharpener? No matter how much I shake out, there's always enough left over to stain my pencil case!

Hi there. Thank you for your question. The 780 mars technico pencil was originally designed for technical drawing alongside our lead sharpener tub 502 which can be used to sharpen it. The sharpener in the back of the pencil is only designed for occasional use when the 502 tub sharpener is not to hand. Therefore the built-in sharpener is not designed for regular use. The only way to clean it is by blowing or tapping it on the table to remove the graphite dust. Hope this helps.

Apologies if daft question, but is this pencil suitable to take travelling (i.e. can you easily retract the lead to carry the pencil loose in a bag)?

Yes the lead will retract back inside the pencil and is thick enough that it will not break rattling around in a pocket or a bag.

I'm looking for a quality writing pencil with large diameter lead. The usual ones only go up to 0.9mm. Is this suitable/comfortable for writing?

It's certainly a good quality pencil. If you're happy with something heavyish this should suit you well; if not perhaps the Mitsubishi or a Koh-I-Noor lead holder would be better bet. Alternatively, there are some 2mm click-to-advance pencils on the market, of which the Staedtler 925 25-20 is one of the nicest.
