Bad radiator cap leaks
I ordered a Gates 31523 Radiator Cap back in December and my coolant got steadily lower over the summer. Performed a radiator pressure test and the radiator was fine. Then I started looking at my cap more closely and noticed a missing upper seal to seal it from the atmosphere so the radiator could not retrieve the coolant when cooling down from the reservoir. After reading the reviews here others have also noted a missing upper seal like mine. I have always trusted Gates parts, so I ordered another Gates 31523 Radiator Cap and this one had the upper seal. What I recieved in a Gates box was a Motorad T16 cap. Another problem was that the top of the cap was wobbly and not secure. The gap between the cap handle and the middle fitting was so bad that I could blow right thru the cap. See picture of the 1mm gap. On the car it seems to seal somewhat with the pressure from the spring but that is not how it should be manufactured. Both Gates radiator caps I have received so far are junk, will not last and may potentially overheat your engine. I will be ordering a Stant but looking at the pictures seems to be the same Motorad T16 cap. We’ll see and if it is as bad as the Gates will also get one star.
