This pen is my favorite for root touch-ups. It’s easy to use, lasts a long time and doesn’t come off on your fingers if you touch your hair like the L’Oréal spray on root dye does. I think it costs a bit more than spray on, and it takes a little more time to apply than spray or powder, but the results are great and you can scratch your head without getting hair dye on your nails which I really hate.

I have tried expensive sprays, the L'Oréal spray and other products. Do not use a spray unless you have a massive area to cover. This is by far the BEST and easiest tool to cover gray. You can cover specific areas without spraying your entire part. I see gray only after 2 weeks but I will not pay for base color every two weeks. This is the way to go.

They better go back to the drawing board on this one. It said you might have to turn it 20 times before the color reached the brush. I gently kept turning it and no color ever reached the brush. The brush top popped off and the color was very stiff and there was no putting it back on. It was rendered useless. I tried to put some color on the brush so I could use it just once but it was a gloopy mess.

So, this product DOES do what it says. In fact, it holds up somewhat even after a wash (which can be good or bad depending on how you feel about the product once it's applied). It's super easy to apply and target exactly where you want it, so much better than sprays. So there's the good news. The bad news, as other reviewers have stated, it's very sticky and stiff once applied. And it looks unnaturally dark. I decided to go with a lighter shade next time but it just doesn't seem available so I'm not sure whether I'll get it again. I ended up rubbing the area thoroughly with a wet rag immediately after applying it just to make it look a little more natural. It didn't remove all the color and it did help with the over-dark look. Overall, I'd say this is great for an emergency situation but I am not going to make it a regular part of my coloring routine. Unfortunately I've reached that stage of gray where the gray roots show significantly earlier than I ought to be re-coloring, so I do need to find a good in-between solution.
