Does this need to be heated in water to attain maximum benefit and nutrition?

Yes...it is generally accepted that you should always steep the powder of any mushroom/fungi that you intend to use therapeutically in hot water, since this is the only proven method of 'breaking' the all important polysaccharides out of the indigestible cell walls (interestingly made from 'chitin', which is also found in lobster shells). Personally I just stir a teaspoon of chaga powder in with my morning coffee....but I'm sure there are some purists out there who will say that you should maybe boil for a few minutes in order obtain 'maximum benefit and nutrition'.
