Everyone should read this
Such an interesting book. I bought it to read to my daughter before bed as I recently noticed how few women artists anyone knows about or learn about at school.

Women in Art
This is a beautifully illustrated book that explores the contribution made by 50 pioneering female artists - including sculptors, architects and painters. Amongst the 50 are famous artists such as Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe, but it also includes lesser known names such as quilter Harriet Powers. Each artist gets a double page spread, the left hand page is an illustration of the artist and the right hand page is a short biography. All the illustrations are by the author - Rachel Ignotofsky - so although they might give an idea of the artist's work, there are no actual examples shown. I think this works for the book (though some people may find it disappointing), and it does encourage you to seek out the art of the artists that interests you.I like the inclusion of three double page spreads about art - Elements and Principles of Art and Design (loved these pages that illustrate artistic terms and explore the colour wheel); Statistics In Art; Art Tools. I think these add something extra to the book, especially appealing if you are considering this as a gift to an art student. There's also a two page source list at the end of the book which provides you with a great jumping off point for more research into any of the artists. If I had any niggle it would be that there is an obvious bias to US artists (perhaps understandable as the author is American). Over 20 of the 50 included artists are from the United States. Most of the other countries (13 or 14 depending if you're including where the artist was born or where they ended up) only have one or two artists mentioned. So if you are especially interested in artists from the UK this might not be the book for you (there are four English artists included here - Julia Margaret Cameron (born in India), Beatrix Potter, Barbara Hepworth and Vivienne Westwood.Overall - a beautiful book about women in art, that would make a lovely gift.
