does it need to be stained it looks as if it wont tolorate any water without warpings

These seats do not need to be stained. I have only had mine for a couple of months. These seats are made to be bolted on and used, period.

wood or mdf????? the true is???

If it says wood veneer, than it's assumed to be wood veneer. PERIOD. If the inside is made from MDF, particle, or plastic/pulp composite, who cares? Apart from glues, that only makes it bettersourced/greener. Wish they told us, since its the bulk of the product, they should legally say. Also, a lot of chrome plated stuff is actually chrome plated plastic, even if it looks metal-ish underneath. Think cheap metal jewelry.

I'm toilet training my cat and need wide FLAT seat (not angled/sloped). Is yours flat? ie if you put a drop of water on it, does it roll off?

Edges of the lid are slightly higher than the middle which is fairly flat. The seat itself is very slightly rounded at edges. I imagine your cat's claws will damage the surface though.

Since metal originating in China typically crumbles within a few weeks of use, how long can I expect this product to last?

the metal is not the units problem. the veneer that covers the manmade substrate is in our case poorly glued. thus it separates and is now unsightly and crude. the veneer will be a problem long before the metal. i regret this purchase.
