Q: Previously conflicting answers: Will this stapler open up more to staple something thick like foam?

Sarah: The lower jaw is held in place with a detent, When opened it will swing on its hinge 180. I think that the design is so the top can be held verticle and the bottom will hang straight down so staples can be pressed into a bulletin board etc. That said you could open the stapler, gain access for the foam, bring the bottom up against the bottom of the foam and compress and set a staple. The problem would be if the foam is too thick or fragile the staple may not crimp or even tear-out. If you leave it open and staple foam to a wall it would work but for the size of staple and the density of the wall.

Q: Does this stapler sit or does it lay?

It stands on end great (front of stapler on the desk), but rocks if you put it flat like a traditional stapler. It lays on it's side well. I love this stapler, I have a rubber band through the eye hole on the end of the stapler and which I hook on the wall and never even take it down to use. I bough this to replace a stapler that fit upright in a rotating desk caddy but love it much more than the origianl.
