This information guide is dated but still is a great reference for any visitor to Italy
Italy for dummies has a good format for a tourist guide. It is chock full of information that is very good for the first-time tourists to Italy. The information contained within the regional breakout - those chapters that discuss it specific to the area and was a good, brief compilation have information that leads one to study further about the specific topic discussed on the Internet, as well they also reiterate throughout the different chapters of those important messages that a tourist needs to know throughout the country. any information discussing applications used on cell phones and tablets is rather dated however the majority of the sites cited were still good sites to review. Don't expect the most up-to-date tourist information guides and applications cited in this edition of the book . The book did reference though very good locations where one could find the most up-to-date information on specific topics such as transportation by train or by bus or by metro or by car. It really helped to use the book to lead me to more up-to-date information on specific website about transportation there. It was also a good reference book to lead one to websites where discount cards for tourists entering the country could be obtained.

SAVED ME!!
Cannot stress enough how helpful this one! I sent my daughter off to Rome this summer to study abroad, and was very nervous as she had never been outside of the country and didn't know what to expect. This book gave great detail about the history, cultural norms, and minute details concerning each major city (what to do there, where to eat, etc.) I read the book and tagged many pages for her, but she said she read it on the plane and that it was incredibly helpful. It saved her a lot of time, and, frankly, a lot of embarrassment from looking dumb in many situations. I visited the last couple weeks of her trip, and we both agreed that this book saved us many times. If you are willing to read, I promise this is incredibly helpful and will definitely make you feel more comfortable if you are nervous about traveling to Italy for the first time. Also, if you are thinking about traveling to Italy and aren't sure, GO! Best trip of our lives.

Dummie Fan
I think this is my 6th "Dummies" book and I am definitely a fan. Any time I need to learn about something in depth, whether it be a hobby or something I'm pursuing, even medical issues, I look for one of these books on the subject. My husband and I are planning a 3 week trip to Italy later this year visiting Rome,Venice,Florence and Naples, and are doing all of the planning ourselves. By checking out the recommendations, websites, etc. in this book we feel very comfortable with our arrangements and plans. Another suggestion I would suggest in addition to the book and websites is to go on to Google Maps and pull up some of the addresses where you will be staying and visiting. Most streets have a "street view" and you can pan 360 degrees as well as progress down the streets to see exactly what to expect at each location. I was able to discover things about hotels we had selected that I would not have otherwise known. Now after all the planning, my biggest challenge is to learn enough of the language to be able to get by.

Very helpful
Bought this book for our 3 week trip to Italy. Our past European trips were tours but this trip was on our own traveling by train in Italy. I was very anxious about doing it on our own at our age. I had several other books but found this one the most helpful. I liked the historical background on the cities we visited and the suggestions of what to do for different length stays in the various cities. I found all the tips and information accurate. It is easy to read and goes into just the right amount of detail. I will say to those couples where the husband is not thrilled with traveling, go on a river cruise where you can park him on the ship with beer and snacks while you happily explore.

A useful guide to a beautiful country
As with any guide book, the information presented was accurate at publication, and one must always use some common sense and check current references when travelling. Having said that, this book did give a plain language and useful overview of what we saw on our recent trip, with some background information and nuanced advise that was helpful.

Lots of helpful tips.
I always enjoy the for dummies books. You get a good deal of information without the mindless blather. The physical size of this one is perfect for packing along as you trek through the streets of your favorite city.

I think if you were planning a trip yourself it would be a useful tool, but I was already on a 'tour' ...
Bought this book, went to Italy, didn't find it to help at all... I think if you were planning a trip yourself it would be a useful tool, but I was already on a 'tour' and this book wasn't specific enough to the areas I went to be helpful... Overall it's an easy read, but most helpful tips you could get from any travel book...

Good Introduction to Italy
I found this book to be quite informative as I have found all the Dummies travel books to be. However, I was disappointed that the book did not include any information about the Lake District in Italy. I expected a book about Italy to include information about all the major tourist areas in the country.

Yet to be tested!
We haven't actually travelled to Italy yet, but I have read the book and it's at least easy to read and seems concise. Whether or not the information is helpful....I'll let you know!
