yes charcoal / carbon is "carbonized" in high temperature before putting on the cloth.

Q: If you hold this up to the light can you see through it?

Yes, but I double mine to added extra filtering

I do not know if the filter is Fireproof or not. However, I would NOT use the filter as you described!!!
