Product needs a few software fixes
Started setting up the device, and the default language s/b English; it was, and then jumped to some other language! Stella from Birgus sent me a fix via pics and instructions! I continued the setup. But now it goes off again, and sets up another unknown language, AND adds another screen icon! I emailed Stella once again! But while awaiting feedback, I decided that ‘MY DEVICE’ has got to have more bugs somewhere; and decided to return it. Stella was most helpful, and sincerely tried to get it working, but if I kept this PARTICULAR unit, it was just going to be an ongoing issue! Thanks Stella,Jim Novak

Amazingly good translator
Works easily, accurately. I have tried several different translators. Several different styles. This one is far and away my favorite. Bright clear screen. Adjustable loud volumn. Small light. Comfortable to hold. Maintains charge. Text is easy to read.I use it English to Mandarin Chinese, mostly ,for which it is amazingly accurate.German, italian, Spanish and Tagolog seem good.I wish for an Automatic mode to avoid the necessary button pushing..Note: WiFi connection required.

Strong strengths and a few weaknesses with suggestions for ongoing software improvement.
I bought the Birgus AI translator because my wife is Japanese, we have lived in Japan for several months of each year, over the past six years, and yet I still cannot speak the language because my language learning skills are poor. Part of this is that my auditory perception cannot easily distinguish individual Japanese phonemes when speech is at the normal, everyday pace. When the speech is slowed down, then I can hear the individual sounds much more clearly. I had expected the AI translator to speak 8 languages offline but have yet to discover how this is acheived as the instruction leaflet states that it can only work with a wifi connection. In this respect it does an excellent job at 2-way translation English<=>Japanese. A minor annoyance for me, as a hard-wired Englishman, is that, even when I choose the UK version of English, the voice that is produced comes out with an American accent instead of RP (received pronunciation; i.e. the accent-free diction of central English). The translator hardware is well designed and is constructed well. The translation software is effective, even for phrases of several sentences in length. Clearly the AI technology behind this is good. The photo function works moderately well. Obviously the picture has to be clear but this is sometimes difficult when, for example, in a store one wishes to read the label on the convex surface of a bottle and not all is in focus and/or there is undue glare. The autofocus doesn't always work smoothly even on flat, close-ups. For the most part, however, it is usually possible to understand the gist of a label and hence what the product is for.And now for my big down-side issue. I had hoped that the translator would aid me in learning Japanese phrases that are specific to MY needs. So often what one finds in phrase books are irrelevant to personal circumstances. When used for the AI translation from English into most other European languages the device shows the written text in both languages and it is easy to distinguish the individual words because the Roman script is used for both languages. Unfortunately, learning Japanese scripts is a monumental task and so the display of Kanji+Hiragana+Katakana script by the AI translator is meaningless to me. If the display were to show Romaji (Japanese phonemes converted to Roman script) then I could easily tease out the response that I hear the translator produce and learn the phrase very quickly by reading it at the same time. If the developers of this product could produce options for a slowed-down articulation of the diction along with a Romaji text display option, for Japanese translation, then this would become an enormously more useful tool for my language learning, in addition to on-the-spot translation.I should add that, although learning to use the AI translator is fairly straightforward, the instruction leaflet is very poor. There should be a preamble on how the device works in practice. Also the information is highly terse and not very clear - frequently open to ambiguity. There is no clear information on how to make a recording of the translated phrase and I have still not figured this out through trial and error. In short, there needs to be a comprehensive, well-written manual with this product. It is not enough to make a good product - it's use must also be explained and communicated effectively. It seems ironic that such a criticism should apply to a product that solves language communication issues. Finally I have tried to contact the Birgus website, in order to supply this feedback, but can find nothing that matches. I hope it will filter back to the manufacturer through this portal.Sincerely,Terence Carleton

Not good for effective two way communication - it is too slow
This is not good for effective two way communication - it is too slow. Admittedly, I bought this and used it only for English / Mandarin translation. My GF noted that translation from English to Mandarin worked very well, however, the reverse is not true - I suspect that even though there are several dialects (including Sichuan, which is what my GF speaks), it just isn't up to translating Sichuan to English accurately or the dialect is too tricky. Also, this unit only works when you are connected via WiFi. It is useless when you are out and about (like at a Chinese supermarket, asking for some particular items). If you only need to use it at home, and you don't mind slow conversations, it is not a bad little device. However, Google Translate (for free on your phone) works just as well and is not entirley dependent on WiFi...

No offline language or use. Not good.
This device is rendered useless by having no offline use or language download capability. A translator should be able to work spontaneously to useful. Without wifi, it does not work. Google translate is free and has some offline use. This device can't compete with that!

Can't use it without Wi-Fi
I bought this translator and returned it already. We need a translator for travel, but this translator only can use with Wi-Fi. When you go traveling, you will not have Wi-Fi anywhere. I feel like I only can use it at home, it's so useless. Not worth to buy it!

Functional translator for internatiinal travel
I bought this for my coming trip to EU. After got it, I was able to download several language packs, including German, France, and Spain. Test the translation function on my TV manual which happens to have all these language version. Points the camera to the manual to cover the sentence I want to translate, it scaned the area and recognized the words. Most of the results are good enough to help the user understand. The online function should be better since it links to bigger database.

Amazing Product but.. female only output!
Loved everything about the product. Easy to use, very accurate and has offline languages you can use if internet is not an option. Only reason I give this product 3 stars, is that it lacks male voice option for translation. I can't take the product to business meetings if I am a guy and voice does not match my tone of voice. Please add Male voice!
